Diabetes is a condition in which there is too much sugar (glucose) in the blood. Either the body does not make enough insulin or the insulin it makes doesn’t work properly to control the sugar level in the blood.

Diabetes in Children and Adolescents

Diabetes is one of the most serious health problems facing the world today. In the United States each year, more than 13,000 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Increasingly, health care providers are finding more and more children and teens with type 2 diabetes, a disease usually seen in people over age 40. Although there are no national data, some clinics report that one-third to one-half of all new cases of childhood diabetes are now type 2. African American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian children who are obese and have a family history of type 2 diabetes are at especially high risk for this type of diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body does not make or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy. People with diabetes have increased blood glucose (sugar) levels due to a lack of insulin, insufficient insulin, or resistance to insulin’s effects. High levels of glucose build up in the blood, and spill into the urine and out of the body. As a result, the body loses its main source of fuel. Read more of this article »
